Discover the untouched charm of Folegandros
Hidden next to the popular Santorini, Folegandros is a Greek island few have heard of. Largely untouched by international tourists, the island is packed with that Cyclades charm without the crowds. Yet its beautiful landscapes and sleepy disposition make it one of the best Greek islands to visit, particularly for those seeking a peaceful escape.
Why visit Folegandros?
From the first photo I saw of Folegandros I knew I had to visit this place. It truly is a postcard-perfect Greek island – whitewashed houses, vibrant bougainvillea, cosy tavernas and pristine beaches.
Despite being a short ferry ride from well-known Santorini, Folegandros has managed to preserve its quaint charm and local traditions. And away from the crowds, this island has a laid-back energy that almost transports you back in time.
My advice? Visit Folegandros to experience its unspoiled beauty before word gets out.
Folegandros hotels
Anemi - a luxury resort with a mix of beautifully designed suites and villas. It’s close to the port, so super convenient for visiting the island’s hotspots. The pool area is spacious, with plenty of sunbeds for guests. Our favourite part was the wellness centre. It’s also home to the only yoga studio on the island.
Blue Sand - situated on top of sandy shores, Blue Sand provides easy access to the island’s pristine beaches and coves. Stay here for that island living feel. We got a suite with gorgeous sea-view balcony. Worth every penny!
Gundari - an ideal choice if you’re ready to splurge. Opened in 2024, Gundari seamlessly blends modern luxury and traditional Cycladic architecture. It offers fine dining, first-class spa facilities, and unforgettable Aegean views from a seemingly endless pool. Perfect for honeymooners.
Best things to do in Folegandros
Chora - carved on a cliff above the Aegean, Folegandros’ main town, Chora, looks almost too perfect to be real. The village is everything you imagine a Greek island to be. With traditional Cycladic architecture, relaxed tavernas, trinket shops and vibrant bars, there really is something for everyone. Be sure to also pay a visit to Kastro, the Venetian quarter, which is the oldest part of Chora. Its maze-like structure was used as a form of protection during medieval times.
Church of Panagia - situated on a hill on top of the Chora, this prominent landmark is visible from all over the island. Follow a winding road to the top and you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea. Be sure to stick around for sunset.
Island cruises - as Folegandros is such a small island, you’re able to whizz around its whole coastline on a boat. We picked ours up from Agali and toured all the best beaches and coves from every side of the island. It was such a special experience and the team at Island cruises were brilliant.
Beaches - Folegandros has no shortage of beaches, but Agali, Galifos and Livadaki (only accessible by boat) were our favourites.
Chrysopigi - located at the edge of the island, this is another beautiful spot to watch sunset.
Folegandros restaurants
Pounta - this spot is a Folegandros institution. Come for their delicious breakfast and smoothies.
Eva’s Garden - nestled away in the Chora, this spot is a must visit when visiting Folegandros. The food here was delicious and our favourite on the island. The prawns, kofta and courgette fritters get a special shout out.
Papalagi - situated deep within the rocks overlooking Agios Nikolaos bay, the easiest way to reach this restaurant is by boat from the nearby Agali beach. Enjoy a spread of delicious fresh fish, while watching golden hour take the bay. The whole experience is utterly charming.
To Goupi - located in the heart of the Chora, this is a great spot for people watching. We had lots of lovely mezze plates here – I love being able to try a bit of everything! Don’t miss the saganaki.
Ktima Paliomylos - a winery and vineyard with beautiful views of the Church of Panagia. It offers dinner with live music and serves fresh, local food. The matsata (a Folegandros delicacy) was a highlight and the best we tried on the island.
Le Petit - come here for dessert after you’ve strolled through the Chora. The freshly baked cookie still lives rent-free in my mind!
Folegandros Bakery - a lovely little bakery in Ano Meria. The spanakopita (spinach and feta pie) and orange cake were a firm favourite. Perfect to pick up your beach snacks for the day!
