Your guide to Lefkada, the island of blue
With some of the bluest of sea in Greece, Lefkada is a hotspot for locals in the know. Find out why this island should be next on your bucket list.
Why Lefkada?
Found in the heart of the Ionian Sea, Lefkada has some of the most breathtaking landscapes Greece has to offer. With dramatic white cliffs and crystal clear waters, the beaches here are some of the best I’ve ever seen in Greece. The island is mountainous and vast, offering beautiful sunsets on the west side. It’s also a popular spot for windsurfing in Europe.
You can fly direct to Lefkada, and it is connected to the mainland by a small causeway – giving you the perks of island life without the hassle of catching a ferry.
For me, the island is one of Greece’s best kept secrets.
Where to stay?
For some laidback luxury, Crystal Waters is the place for you.
Situated in Nikiana village, Crystal Waters offers attractive views and stylish facilities. Home to three pools, a swim-up bar and 47 private plunge pools, the hotel gives you ample space to relax during your stay.
There are plenty of restaurant options nearby – either within or just outside the hotel. It’s also a short walk away from the local beach, where you can hire sunbeds and order food/cocktails to be delivered straight to your bed.
Where to visit?
Egremni beach – getting to this beach is half the fun. Park at the top of the hill, walk down the windy road and then descend to the shore down 400 steps. The inviting blue of the Ionian Sea keeps you going. This beach is large, so it never feels crowded. There are no facilities once you’re down there, so come prepared with snacks and water. Avoid making the journey back up during peak heat hours!
Porto Katsiki – expect impressive white cliffs and turquoise waters. This beach is much easier to access, making it a busier spot, but beautiful nonetheless. There’s a café just at the top of the stairs for all your ice cream needs!
Milos beach – come in the afternoon and stay for sunset. This beach is on the west side of the island, so expect a spectacular view. The footpath to this beach starts in the village of Agios Nikitas. Once you find the steps (Google Maps will get you there) follow the path upwards and you’ll soon reach where you need to go.
Ionian boats – a boat trip is an absolute must. Sail past Skorpios – the island where Jacqueline Kennedy remarried in 1968 – and up to Lakka beach. This spot is only accessible by boat, so you have every chance of having it to yourselves.
Where to eat/drink?
Breath of Zorba – just down the road from Crystal Waters and right by the sea. The sea bass here was divine.
Pardalo Katsiki – nestled away in a beautiful courtyard, this restaurant served some of the best food I’ve ever had in Greece. Think traditional Greek food but with a modern twist. Don’t miss the orange cake.
TAVERNA 'TA KANIORIA – another seaside spot, the food here was deliciously fresh. The tuna was a highlight, as well as the complimentary homemade liquor! Put your name down in advance to grab a table here as it’s popular among the locals.
Amente – this restaurant was one of the things that drew me to Lefkada in the first place. Located on a hill side with a view of the west coast, this spot is one of the best places to see sunset on the island. Book 10 days in advance and opt for a poolside table to get the best view. The food and cocktails were great too – I still think about the shrimp tagliatelle.
Utopia Sunset – another great spot to watch sundown. Grab your favourite cocktail or a glass of local wine.
Best time of year to visit?
We travelled in September, which felt perfect – both temperature and tourist wise! Expect the island to be busier in July and August.
How to get there?
Lefkada is the only Greek island accessible by car. Fly to the nearby town of Preveza and drive over a small bridge into Lefkada.
Or if you fancy the scenic route, the island is a 5-hour ride from Athens.
